What is a Building Occupant Warning System (BOWS)?

A Building Occupant Warning System is an ‘alert and evacuate’ tone generator. It has an integral power supply, speaker line supervision, digitised speech messages and PA microphone.

It is designed to connect directly to a fire alarm panel but can be alternatively used stand-alone.

The following features are present in a BOWS:

  • Microphone for emergency public address
  • Fault and status indicators
  • Evacuation Control key switch to select its operating mode
  • Audio inputs for background music, remote audio (which can be used when streaming audio over IP networks)
  • Non-emergency paging (zone-selective with an add-on option)

What are the Australian Standards for Building Occupant Warning System (BOWS)?

Building Occupant Warning System are regulated according to Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

AS 4428.4:2016 is the standard for fire detection, warning, control and intercom systems, control and indicating equipment, emergency intercom control and indicating equipment. The objective of this Standard is to specify the equipment requirements for intercommunications systems for use in assisting in the safe evacuation of building occupants in the event of a fire alarm or other emergency.
